About the NameMarksburg History
Dating from 1231, this castle, towering on a high crag above Braubach, is the only fully preserved medieval fortress on the Rhine. It was owned successively by the Eppsteins, the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, and from 1479, the Landgraves of Hesse, until it fell to the Prussians in 1866, along with Braubach. The tower, 130 ft. high, is a well-known landmark for miles around. Inside, the castle offers its many visitors an authentic picture of medieval fortifications and domestic architecture. It is an impressive complex, comprising a keep and various groups of buildings, dungeons, and baileys, perched in split level fashion on a pinnacle of rock overlooking the river.
