Design Requirements

  • Designed for a family with 1 young child, and expecting more.
  • Desired a more traditional 2-storey design, with wider street exposure not seen in most new homes and sub-divisions.
  • Would like the open, vaulted spaces of newer homes, with Living Room open to the Kitchen and Dining Room areas.
  • Back entry with ˝ bath, closet, and garage access to the separate Family Room for more casual day-to-day living.
  • Four bedrooms upstairs to allow for the expansion of the small family.

This home was designed for a young couple with a young daughter, who desired a more traditional 2-storey design with all the modern conveniences, and interior design freedom that comes with building a new home. The original design was from a circa 1970’s 2-storey plan that had an overall width for the house of about 60’! The challenge & expense of finding a 65’-70’ wide lot within the city limits led to proposal to orientate the house on the side-street side of a conventional corner lot. Initially designed for a modest, corner lot in Arbor Creek, the homeowners decided a slightly larger lot in Silverspring would be perfect. This corner lot actually sides on a main street with the front of the lot at the entrance into a small cul-de-sac, creating essentially a peninsula effect for the lot and home. The front of the home now stretches along the side of the lot, and allows for a grander, more stately appearance from the street.

The interior layout of the home includes a large, vaulted Living Room with gas fireplace, open to the vaulted Kitchen and bayed Dining Room, typical to many of our newer homes. The back entry with ˝ bath and access to the separate Family Room, allows for more casual entry and spaces for day-to-day living. Four bedrooms upstairs allow for the expansion of the small family, but presently provides space for a home office, and a playroom for the homeowners’ daughter. The Master Suite boasts a large walk-in closet and full Ensuite bath with a tiled 6’ soaker tub.

Part of the attraction of having a home built out on a peninsula was the ability to view the streetscape, and be viewed, from three sides as opposed to one or two. To enhance this view the dining area was bayed out on both sides, creating a 5-sided bay window, which has a greater than 180-degree view of the street and cul-de-sac. This creates a large, circular space for a dining suite that feels more part of the outside environment, while also adding to the street appeal by carrying design details around the entire house. We felt it was important to carry the detailing on the front of the home not only around the one side, but around the entire building. This includes adding the stucco quoining detail to all corners of the house, including bay windows on three sides of the home, and adding decorative white grills to all of the windows.
